Career coaches, how can job seekers secure a role when few jobs are being advertised? While hiring rates are showing a slight uptick, those in struggling industries are looking for roles to no avail. I want to hear from career coaches and professional development experts about alternate ways to secure a role. We’re talking approaching companies, pitching your own title, creating a business and more. What’s your best tip for job seekers keen to get hired? #gethiredaustralia #jobseekers

Securing a job or regular income is even more challenging when few jobs are advertised. This is especially difficult if job seekers have been in paid work for a long time and they have found themselves suddenly unemployed. I would suggest they get stuck into the free LinkedIn resources and find a good career coach who has social media and business development and sales skills. What got them the role or got them paid yesterday is not necessarily going to get them their next paid gig.

Be optimistic and positive. A negative attitude and approach will always show through and put potential employers off. After all, who wants to hire a "sad sack" or "mood hoover"!

I imagine you call it 'mozart time' because you listen to Mozart? Or is there another reason. Thanks for your three tips. Giving ourselves the gift of time is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves - perhaps self-acceptance too. Thanks, Andy Fell

The most important thing is to get clear on exactly what sort of role you want and WHY, and how that fits into your personal and professional values - and WHY. Once you have that clarity then you can update your digital presence to reflect your value & explore your networks. If you don't know what you want you won't be able to see it when it crosses your path, you can't ask for it and you can't articulate it in a profile/CV, letter, etc.

A very good article and insight! My 5 tips are: Know what you want 2) dust off your CV and align that with what you want 3) Amend LinkedIn accordingly 4) Prepare your "Who am I" for the "tell me more about yourself" question and ... most important 5) Be able to tell a story in an interview! You can do all the wonderful planning and preparation, but if you fail in the interview, all the hard work is of no use. Get a coach (like myself) to train you ;)
